How to lose weight is perhaps one of the top things to do on your 2018 list in there. However, as much as you might want weight loss, you’re not going to be able to accomplish it without a strict diet and exercise regime – something which, in the age of 14-hour work days and Friday nights that end at 4 am, is frankly quite impossible. But even if you have neither the time for 5-12 minute workouts every day nor the (mental) bandwidth to follow the keto diet that celebrities swear by, there’s still hope. Luckily for you, we’ve figured out how to lose weight without having to hit the gym. All you need to do instead is sweat it out between the sheets. Yes, that pickup line you’ve used (and been blocked over) on Tinder is true – having sex really does burn calories. Read on to know how to lose weight by having sex.
According to guidelines laid down by the World Health Organisation (WHO), adults between the ages of 18-64 should ideally indulge in either two and a half hours of moderate-intensity physical activity or an hour and fifteen minutes of high-intensity physical activity per week. Each bout of ‘activity’ needs to last at least 10 minutes (you know what to do here, gentlemen) in order for the person to benefit from the exercise. So if the idea of 15 sessions of a minimum of 10-minutes each spread out across the week doesn’t make you want to lose weight, we don’t know what will.
For those still sceptical of the idea getting busy to get fit, a study conducted by Professor Antony D Karelis and his team at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) has shown that the average sexual encounter – which began with foreplay and ended with at least one person achieving orgasm – was a more intense activity than walking (though slightly less intense than jogging) and could be categorised as a moderate-intensity activity.
In order to arrive at this conclusion Prof Karelis and his team at UQAM studied 42 men and women, ie, 21 heterosexual couples, between the ages of 18 and 35. The couples had sex at least once every week for a month, during which the researchers were able to measure how many calories the two burned thanks to an activity tracker attached to the participants of the study.
It was found that during an average sex session, men burned 101 calories whereas women burned 69.
Unless you’re only slightly overweight and have been pretty healthy all your life, burning fat and building muscle isn’t going to be easy for you – and just exercise isn’t going to get you there. For men with a BMI between 19.5 to 31, it takes a lot more to actually lose weight. In fact, a study by researchers from City University of New York (CUNY) found that while working out was great for both physical and mental health, it did not exactly lead to direct weight loss – and even if it did at first, you would plateau after a while. According to Prof Herman Pontzer, who lead the study, what people need to work on is managing diet and preventing the weight from coming back.
So how does sex play a part here?
According to reports, the chemicals released in the human brain during exercise and sex act as natural anxiety busters. An article published Nature Reviews Endocrinology explains that oxytocin, which is produced in the hypothalamus area of the brain and the levels of which are significantly higher post sex, reduces “caloric consumption”.
It has been shown that having sex decreases hunger. Hormones released post coitus suppress gherlin, the hormone that makes you hungrier. They also regulate how cholecystokinin (CCK), the hormone that let’s you know when you’re full, functions. Having sex makes you feel more satisfied faster because your post-coital hormones are regulating the ‘potency’ of CCK.
Why sex is a better answer to ‘How to lose weight?’
Given a choice between sex and the gym, we’re willing to bet our bottom dollar that you would choose sex. Every. Single. Time. It’s the best kind of exercise you can commit to, really. For starters, you don’t even have to get out of bed for it. And while going to the gym and eating proper proportions takes hard work and discipline, sex requires none of that and pretty much gets both the jobs done in one go. You don’t have to have sex to lose weight, but you want to. It’s biology. You might not have the time to do those crunches but you will make time for your lady. And you should, because not only is getting some action great for your health, it’s great for your relationship too. So now you can lose weight and maintain it, without even having to get out of bed.
